Reasons to wake up

and not go back to sleep

  1. Have a job that requires you to show up at a certain time. This doesn’t work if you’re unemployed, or if your job doesn’t require you to show up at certain times.

  2. Work on that puzzlehunt you’re working on. Yeah, you don’t have any formal obligations this year, unlike the previous years. And it’s not crunch time, and no one’s depending on you, and it’s not exciting enough that it’ll get you out of bed… even if it’s exciting enough it’ll get solvers out of bed, once it’s done. If it gets done.

  3. Finish writing that blog post, the one you’re writing because only you can write it, the one that won’t exist if not for you. Well, that last point is a little less true these days, now that machines can shape words in the vague outline of anything you point them at. But that never stopped you from trying. At least, in the past.

  4. Play that video game you’re in the middle of, because you want to see the ending. Assuming you have such a video game you’re in the middle of. And want to see the ending of.

  5. Maybe you’ve scheduled brunch with someone. Or, hell, lunch, because sometimes you’re not even awake for normal-person lunch hours. Unfortunately most of your friends have day jobs, so you can’t really schedule such things on weekdays. Is the thought of eating food enough to get you out of bed, or would you rather starve yourself to sleep?

  6. It’s been five days in a row you’ve slept for twelve hours. Five. You don’t want to make it six. You know how embarrassing it’d be to tell your psych.

  7. Fine, don’t get out of bed, then. Wallow until you are sick. See how much you can handle before you reach your breaking point. Coward that you are, for life to scare you so. Maybe you should get out of bed so you can continue hating yourself.

  8. Tonight, we’re gonna drink enough water so that tomorrow, you’ll need to get up to use the restroom.
